Austria: Lifting of tax restrictions in Austria?

Article Abstract:

The potential lifting of a 1996 rule disallowing the validation of pre-tax deductions on certain cars, recognisable by a partition between their front and rear is likely. It is estimated that it would cost the treasury around Sch 200mn a year, were this tax restriction abolished. Expenditure on petrol and repairs need also be taken into account. The abolishion of the Fiskal-Lkw (a certain type of passenger car) resulted in the registration of approximately 10.000 new vehicles as companies increasingly bought Klein-Lkws (a small passenger car), However, this trend could now end. This is one of many changes to tax restrictions, many of which affect the savings package of 1996. Another lifting of tax restrictions concerns business meals and this could set the treasury back by approximately Sch 200 to 300mn per year.

Austria: Research into drivers' behaviour

Article Abstract:

A group of experts met on 4 December 2001 in Vienna to discuss the behaviour of car drivers. The experts claimed that limitations on the freedom to use the car make drivers aggressive, but in traffic jams, suggestions of how to avoid the jam are rarely taken up. The car fulfils man's dream of invincibility , in that in a car man is stronger than ever before, and people feel unwoundable when they are inside cars. The car is a reflection of the ego, allowing drivers to express who they are and who they are not. Traffic jams for no apparent reason on the motorway happen because, if someone brakes, it sends a "braking wave" through the cars behind it, and columns of cars moving at an identical speed produce a better flow-rate than cars moving at different speeds.

AUSTRIA: LAYOFFS AT EUROSTAR

Article Abstract:

Eurostar, the Austrian subsidiary of DaimlerChrysler, has laid off the staff in the production of Voyager minivans in Graz from the Christmas holiday until 7 February 2000. Beside the adverse development on markets in Asia and South America, the slack demand is explained with the poor results of a crash test with the Voyager. In 1999 Eurostar made about 50,000 Voyager minivans in Graz. In January 2001 it is to start making the new Voyager model Town and Country.
