Austria: Speculation about fighter purchase

Article Abstract:

It is speculated that the terrorist attacks on the US may affect the tender for 24 to 30 interceptor fighters by the Austrian defence ministry. It is suggested that Austria might opt for Lockheed Martin's F-16 planes out of solidarity to the US. Until now the Gripen of Saab-British Aerospace had been seen as the favourite for the Sch 20bn to 25bn purchase. Lockheed Martin is said to have promised to provide used F-16 planes for the period from 2003 when the existing Draken fleet is gradually taken out of use.
