Austria: Tests on insulin for inhalation
Article Abstract:
In the Vienna Hanusch hospital a study on the inhalation of insulin to treat diabetes is in progress. Doctor Gertrude Kacerovsky-Bielesz states that the inhalated insulin will take effect in only five to 10 minutes, and therefore has an advantage over the method of injecting insulin. Further tests have to be done before the product can be made available on the market. From the beginning of 2002 a modification in the dilution of insulin will be made, the concentration of the insulin will increase form 40 units to 100 units per millilitre. Guntram Schernthaner, president of the Austrian diabetes society, warns of the consequences that the modification can have for the end-user, if he is not aware of the increases in insulin level. Consumption of alcohol was strictly forbidden for people diagnosed with diabetes until now, it has now been found out by recent studies in the US that the in-take of up to14 grams of alcohol a day can help to lower general health risks for people suffering diabetes. Furthermore, it was found out that a glass of wine a day can lower the probability of the outbreak of diabetes within people with a predisposition for diabetes.
