BA may defy EU over slots

Article Abstract:

British Airways intends to sell its slots at the Gatwick and Heathrow airports in London, UK, if that country's officials permit it without regard for concerns aired by European Union regulators. British Airways director of corporate resources David Holmes indicated that the U.K. secretary for trade and industry Peter Mandelson would have the legal jurisdiction to rule on the sale. The company will base its decision on that official's ruling, noted Holmes. The carrier has been contesting an assertion by EU Competition Commissioner Karel Van Miert that it should give up the slots without compensation.
