BMW opens door to tech alliances: sharing costs may help independent car maker rev up profit growth

Second-quarter net profit for BMW AG dropped 23% even though revenue rose by 7.3%. BMW seeks to curb costs by forming alliances with other auto manufacturers; deals include the development of hybrid drive technologies with DaimlerChrysler and General Motors, and building four-cylinder engines for models with Peugeot.

BMW's net profit increases 78%

Third-quarter net profit for German auto maker BMW AG rose by 78% to reach $1.16 bil, fostered by increased car sales and a positive influence from a change in the nation's corporate tax policy. Revenue rose by 19%, while car sales were up by 13%, totaling 364,564 vehicles.
