Bangkok feels American pressure to liberalize its telecom market

Article Abstract:

Some Thai government officials feel that the US is putting too much pressure on Thailand to liberalize its telecommunications market. They claim that the country's telecommunications market is relatively more open as compared to other nations. Observers claim, however, that the opposite is true and that an elite club of public and private concerns exercise monopolistic control over Thailand's telecommunications market.

Cable & Wireless to retain 57.5% stake in Hong Kong Telecom, may deal later

Article Abstract:

Cable and Wireless Chmn. Brian Smith dismissed rumors that the company intends to sell its 57.5% interest in Hong Kong Telecommunications Ltd. However, Smith stated that the company may still divest its shares in the telecommunications unit in the near future. He also ruled out the possibility that C&W may revive its merger negotiations with British Telecommunications PLC.

Beijing continues broad influence over telecom industry

The Chinese government is planning to divide China Telecommunications Corp., its fixed-line telephone monpoly, into two regional firms, each being a primary provider of local and long-distance telephone service. The government plans to hold an initial public offering.
