HSBC's purchase of stake in Taiwan may spark trend

Article Abstract:

In a deal that some see as an expression of confidence in Taiwan's sagging financial markets, HSBC Holdings PLC unit HSBC Asset Management Ltd. is purchasing a 53% stake in China Securities Investment Trust Corp. from China Development Industrial Bank for about $103 million. Uni-President Enterprises Corp. is rethinking its plans to list its Chinese food-products operation on the Hong Kong market, instead considering a listing on the Chinese market.

Key policy cuts both ways

Article Abstract:

The Taiwan government is considering loosening restrictions on Taiwanese investment in China, such as the $50 million per project limit and a ban on investment in infrastructural and high-technology projects. The government fears greater political control from China and capital flight to the mainland, but still sees a need to stimulate the economy by allowing greater investments in China.

Bank of East Asia's plan to buy rival won't have much impact, analysts say

Article Abstract:

A substantial number of analysts believe that Bank of East Asia Ltd.'s planned acquisition of United Chinese Bank Ltd. will have little effect on the former's share value. Even with the acquisition, the small size of United Chinese Bank means that it will have a negligible impact on Bank of East Asia's bottom line. Investors are still advised to sell their Bank of East Asia shares.
