Bearing arms: Russia poised to sell weapons in Asean

Article Abstract:

The successful completion of a deal for sale of MiG29 fighter aircraft by Russia to Malaysia will improve Russia's prospects of arms sales to other Asean countries. the concerns of Asean members about the reliability of Russian arms will be satisfied if Malaysia, which has made rigorous investigations into the technological and logistical aspects of the deal, purchases the aircraft. Most Asean countries want to update their obsolete arms and to develop alternate suppliers of weapons.

Forging stronger links: Asean moves closer to formalising security ties

Article Abstract:

Association of South East Asian Nations (Asean), the US, Japan, the EC, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea will send representatives to Singapore in the third week of May 1993 to agree on the essentials of a multilateral security forum for Asean's six members. Asean has thus acceded to Japan's Jul 1991 suggestion that it turn its attention away from strictly economic matters in favor of regional security. Reduction in US military forces in East Asia is one topic for discussion.

Stormy passage: Japan's plutonium shipment scares Asean

Article Abstract:

Japan's plans to ship plutonium through the Malacca Straits are causing fears of accidents among countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. The shipments highlight the need for international cooperation in improving measures for prevention of shipping accidents and terrorist attacks. Japan's acquisition of a large stockpile of plutonium is causing nations to suspect that its nuclear program is not entirely for peaceful purposes.
