Northwest could lose its lucrative pact with KLM

Article Abstract:

Northwest Airlines Corp. of Eagan, Minnesota, may lose its ability to work closely with its longtime European partner KLM Royal Dutch Airlines if it cannot obtain antitrust immunity for a similar alliance with Air France, KLM's new owner. The U.S. Department of Transportation is currently considering Northwest's plea.

The current move towards the relaxation of airline regulations, especially by the United States and Europe, is due in great measure to the efforts of Leo van Wijk, CEO of KLM. KLM's 2003 merger with Air France has led to cost savings and increased market share.
