Aventis and Schering-Plough have both launched phase 3 trials of their anti-cancer therapy, which puts cancer gene therapy further along than any other area of gene therapy research.

Trials on Humans Will Begin for Drug Based on Genes. Human Genome Sciences Extends Lead Over Rivals

Human Genome Sciences Inc. (Rockville, MD) received approval from the FDA for a drug trial of a B-lymphocyte stimulator, which has shown promise in rebuilding impaired immune systems. The test will concentrate on cancer and elderly patients.

AIDS vaccine tests set for Africa, Asia (Rhone-Poulenc, VaxGen plan separate trials)

Article Abstract:

Two companies have announced their intention to test experimental AIDS vaccines in Africa and Thailand. France's Rhone-Poulenc has already begun testing in Uganda. California-based VaxGen Inc. has received permission from the government of Thailand to launch the largest AIDS vaccine clinical trial outside of the United States.
