Between guns and economics

Article Abstract:

The US has criticised Japan's fiscal policy, and this could have an impact on the military alliance between the two countries. Japanese politics have been affected by change, and anti-Americanism could be used to attract voters. The US needs cooperation with Japan in order to deal with the problem of North Korea, where people may be starving, and the leader could be mad. Economic pressure may be justified, and there is a temptation to increase it, but the fragility of the military alliance could be further exacerbated.

Goodwill - and a group of islands

Article Abstract:

Argentina's President Carlos Menem is to visit the United Kingdom on Oct 27 1998. The two countries have improved their relations since they were at war in 1982 over the Falklands or Malvinas islands. British capital and settlers were important in the development of Argentina, and soccer was introduced from Britain. There is a deadlock on the issue of the Falklands and the islands represent an emotive issue in Argentina. The issue is likely to persist as an irritant affecting relations between Argentina and the UK.

Hesitant revolutionaries

Article Abstract:

Egyptians tend to see themselves as natural leaders of Arabs world wide, though Egypt's role among Arab countries has changed, and relations with the US have improved. The US is proving aid for Egypt which is only gradually being reduced. There are disagreements between the US and Egypt over policy toward Israel, with Egypt arguing that Israel will only deal with the Palestinian's problems if pressure is exerted. Meanwhile, Egypt has to allow greater freedom to its people to ensure that economic reforms persist.
