Indians' revenge

Article Abstract:

There has been a proposal to change gambling regulations covering native American tribal lands in California. Proposition 5 would enlarge permission for such activity as well as renewing it. Forty one of California's 112 Indian tribes operate casinos and Proposition 5 is backed by 80 tribes. The proposition is opposed by those who fear it involves an increase in unrestricted gambling in California, and by Nevada gambling interests which are spending increasing sums opposing Proposition 5. Voters appear likely to support the proposition.

Gambling on the future

Article Abstract:

The National Gambling Impact Study Commission, set up in 1996, has issued a report on gambling in the US. The report is concerned about the impact of gambling, which has risen as a percentage of personal income. Gambling is said to raise funds for good causes, but this may be an illusion in that funds are displaced and new money is not raised. There are 76 recommendations in the report including raising the age for gambling and taxing gambling revenues to raise funds to tackle pathological gambling.

The trouble is, it makes money

Article Abstract:

Some 5,000 video-poker machines have been shut down in Louisiana in line with a referendum in 1996 when 33 parishes of a total of 66 voted in favor of removing such machines. This follows bad publicity for video gaming machines, but they are a source of tax revenue, and some observers argue that the ban will be short-lived. Another solution for the industry is to use riverboat casinos which lie outside the jurisdiction of parished where the machines are banned.
