Product review

Article Abstract:

There is still a strong attraction to Victorian-style bathrooms in the UK. Leading suppliers include BC Sanitan and Armitage Shanks. There is almost no technical innovation in the kitchen furniture sector, but manufacturers are responding to changing customer tastes by including much more timber in mid-range products. Shaker-style kitchens remain extremely popular. For taps, saving water has become a key feature. The only real innovations in the kitchen and bathroom sectors have been the Missel compact toilet cistern and the Rinsal combined urinal and washbasin from architect Lucas Mellinger.

Daylight control in galleries

Article Abstract:

Daylight control is important in galleries to make the best of exhibitions, but also to prevent damage to artworks. Artworks can be damaged by high ultra-violet radiation levels or high internal light levels as a result of large fluctuations in external light levels. Textiles, organic materials, paper, water-colours, some oil painting pigments and natural history specimens are damaged by light. The angle of illumination is important to avoid glare for visitors, and the floor's brightness must be low. Windows and skylights must be located so that bright light does not affect viewing.

Product review

Article Abstract:

Use of natural daylight in the work environment offers energy saving efficiencies. It also has physical and psychological benefits for employees. Daylit working conditions improve visual functioning, work speed and powers of concentration, and may reduce rates of sick leave. Daylight penetrates up to 10 meters into a room, but the building designer can choose from a range of systems which will reduce glare and and redirect daylight for maximum benefit. The more advanced systems will incorporate the use of prismatics.
