Investment banks seeking a strong advisory position in Europe's competitive mergers and acquisitions (M&A) market need effective research and organisational capabilities in the main sectors of technology, telecom and financial institutions. Banking consolidation in Europe has linked fig specialists who have expertise in these fields with country managers to handle execution. The activities of the major players currently performing in these sectors are analysed.

The boutique banking industry faces a threat from accountancy firms which are moving in to their territory. Boutiques in the UK must develop if they are to survive. While accountancy firms seek the larger end of the market, boutiques need to find a niche and can gain an edge by providing high levels of service. A directory of independent finance boutiques is included.
