Bijlmermeer: designing the future of urban renewal

Article Abstract:

Two blocks of flats on the Bijlmermeer housing estate, Amsterdam, Holland were destroyed in the El Al air-crash on Oct 4 1992. The disaster has galvanised opinion on the rebuilding of the estate. Bijlmermeer was designed in the 1960s and 70s as a development of high rise, prefabricated blocks set in landscaped surroundings. It won architectural awards but was unpopular with tenants and has become deprived and neglected. In common with similar developments in other European cities, plans for rennovation must be formulated in co-operation with residents and aim to solve fundamental problems.

Design and build in the social-housing sector

Article Abstract:

The first phase of the refurbishment of a high density 1930s housing estate in London, England has been completed under a design and build contract. The refurbishment of the seven blocks of flats in the Amhurst Road estate was planned in the mid 1980s by architect, ECD. The blocks are being re-roofed and converted into maisonettes and flats with better thermal and sound insulation. Changes in funding policy delayed the scheme and necessitated a design and build approach but the project was completed with few problems and the refurbished housing is successful.

The department is currently working on the refurbishment of post-war estates and tenament houses. Its policy of close consultation with tenants has forced it to undertake innovative and unusual works.
