The UK market for fish, bird and small pet food is anticipated to be worth an estimated 36.1 million pounds sterling by 2003, showing a small decline in sales due to birds becoming less popular as pets. The UK market for fish, bird and small pet food was valued at 37.2 million pounds sterling in 1998. Sales of food products for fish were worth 30.6 million pounds sterling compared to 2.3 million pounds sterling for sales of food for small pets and 4.3 million pounds sterling for sales of bird food. Small pets include snakes, lizards and rodents.

A new publication lists all the Important Bird Areas (IBA's) in the UK. There are 256 areas, most of which have seen great change as the UK countryside has been developed this century. The IBA's are considered to be the most important sites for birds but may also contain other wild creatures worthy of attention.
