Article Abstract:

The Aug 31, 1995, assassination of Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh threatens to renew violence in Punjab after a three-year calm, trigger new unrest in Kashmir, and damage Indian Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao's preparations for elections by mid-1996. Rao needed Singh as an ally, and peace in the Punjab was one of his major achievements and a campaign platform. Now Rao's Congress party is torn anew over how to handle renewed tensions within the territory and with Pakistan, which has been accused of supporting the terrorists involved.

Sleek and sassy: BMW races past Rolex on product quality

Article Abstract:

Technology companies scored high in 1995 in most categories of Far Eastern Economic Review's REVIEW 200 leadership survey, but luxury car-makers dominated the High Quality Service/Products category, the one respondents say is most important. BMW took the top slot there, after a busy year throughout Asia. McDonald's took the honors in Innovativeness in Responding to Customer Needs, Microsoft led in Long-Term Vision, Union Bank of Switzerland was judged financially soundest, and Coca-Cola was rated the company others most want to emulate.

CORPORATE FORECAST: BAJAJ AUTO

Article Abstract:

Most of the securities houses have predicted good results for Bajaj Auto in 1998-99. ABN Amro has predicted an earnings per share (EPS) of Rs41.3 while ICICI Securities has predicted an EPS of Rs47.1. Lloyds Securities has predicted an EPS of Rs43.3 while Warburg Dillon Read of the US has forecast an EPS of Rs43.7. The consensus is that the company will give an EPS of Rs44.1 in 1998- 99. (khr)
