Thanks, but no thanks

Article Abstract:

A call by the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Newt Gingrich, for recognition of Taiwan's independence drew little response from the island, whose leaders do not want to anger mainland China. Current Taiwanese policy, they add, does not call for seeking such recognition, as it would complicate cross-straits relations. Some opposition figures, however, such as the Democratic Progressive Party's Paris Chiang, say the comments were long-awaited, and that Taiwanese who do not welcome them are fixated on reunification.

What's good for the goose

Article Abstract:

The United Nations should admit Taiwan on the same basis that it considered admitting China in 1950, as set forth in then-UN secretary-general Trygve Lie's Mar 8 memorandum. While not all nations recognize Taiwan for reasons of politics or self-interest, it indisputably meets the criteria for UN membership and has much to contribute to that body. Furthermore, membership would create an excellent forum for talks with China, as equals, on unification, and might forestall disastrous Chinese aggression.
