Blood money: war guilt admission spurs compensation claims

Article Abstract:

Japan's new prime minister, Morihiro Hosokawa, parted company with his predecessors on Aug 10, 1993 by admitting that Japanese aggression caused the Pacific War part of World War II. Hosokawa's first significant policy address on Aug 23 will probably contain a formal apology to the Asian nations that Japan occupied during the war. Japan's fuller acceptance of war guilt has reinforced renewed calls for Japan to compensate the victims of its military rule, such as the Asian women whom the Japanese military forced to act as sexual slaves.

Luxury with an acid whine

Article Abstract:

The Asian Development Bank's (ADB) headquarters in Manila is an irony. Situated in busy Mandaluyong, its fine and efficient environment is a direct contrast to the disorder that prevails in the metropolis. Security in the vicinity was beefed up and contingency plans were formulated in the event of a coup. ADB's main goal is to foster prosperity in Asian nations, a fact that heightened the irony. No plans were made, however, for the relocation of headquarters.

Saving face in Malaysia

Article Abstract:

Malaysian businessmen never would like to admit defeat publicly and are inclined to put up the best face even in the midst of insurmountable odds. Take for instance the case of business magnate T.K. Lim. With his bid for control over Pilecon Engineering in shambles, Lim has presumably conceded defeat but has put up a tough face in public by demanding representation on the company's board.
