Britain backs off

Article Abstract:

Britain has effectively disavowed the policies of Hong Kong Governor Chris Patten but domestic British politics protect him from the further humiliation of a recall. London overruled his plan for the Court of Final Appeal in mid-summer, and China swiftly confirmed London rather than Patten as the source of Hong Kong decisions. While Patten's unilateral overruling of the agreed legislative structure remains a fait accompli, most of his other decisions have been undone, and future embarrassment is avoidable.

Straw poll: who will make the best chief executive?

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong's political and business elite largely agree that Anson Chan remains a desirable candidate for Hong Kong's first chief executive under Chinese authority. However, her close ties to Great Britain are a liability, and Tung Chee-hwa, now considered by some the front-runner, is acceptable to most. Some consider a business background advantageous, while others would prefer a professional, professor, or public servant. China is likely to wait until the last minute before making its wishes clear.

India's China frame-up

Article Abstract:

The current Indian government is presenting China as the country's main strategic threat. It is important that western countries do not fall into the trap of believing India's claims of Chinese aggression, as there is no excuse for doing so. Recent Indian governments have sought to shift away from the aggressive stance against China passed down by Jawaharlal Nehru, but the present government has moved back to this stance. It thus seems that renewed conflict with China is inevitable.
