Broken wings

Article Abstract:

The collapse of Peregrine, the largest local investment house in Asia outside Japan, has inevitably had a negative impact on the Hong Kong stock market. The effects of the company's demise are likely to be felt for some time to come. Already, the way in which Peregrine amassed large exposures in the debt market has led to concerns being raised about the limitations of Hong Kong's regulatory system. Its collapse has also served to highlight the dangers associated with the lack of transparency which characterizes many businesses in Asia.

Local lessons

Article Abstract:

The most successful investment banks and related organizations in Asia treat the area as a collection of local markets and focus on aligning their strategic strengths with regional tendencies. At the same time, many foreign companies that came to Asia at the beginning of the decade are retrenching or pulling out altogether as they discover how undeveloped the markets there still are. Large US companies seem the most able to compete successfully, thanks in part to their long experience in New York.

Guns for hire

Article Abstract:

Top US investment banks are quickly spreading in Hong Kong, attracted by prospects in the China market and in Asia's potential growth. As a result, the colony has begun to resemble a frenzied Wall Street and become a home base for financial teams hunting for corporate deals in the region, with tales of wheeling and dealing and staff defections permeating conversations. The influx of investment banks is an indication of Asia's changing financial landscape.
