Brussels v Boeing: The European Union's competition commissioner still wants to veto Boeing's merger with McDonnell Douglas

Article Abstract:

The European Union remains steadfast in its opposition to the merger of Boeing and McDonnell Douglas. The EU firmly believes that the merger would drastically reduce European airlines' choice of aircraft. The merger also would increase Boeing's international market share from 64% to 70%, as opposed to Airbus, with a 30% market share. Another sticking point is the 20-year-exclusive deal offered by Boeing to its airline customers, which could undermine the demand for Airbus's planned 550-seat aircraft. As of Jul 1997, the merged company had already locked up Delta, Continental and American for exclusive rights to provide all their aircraft.
