China faces growing pains: highway expansion may be leading nation to new struggles

Article Abstract:

China is facing a new set problems brought about by the expansion of its highways. Boomtowns are sprouting along these new roads which have led to increased crime, pollution and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. These towns are also attracting migrants from poor provinces searching for employment with many becoming homeless. Moreover, tiny villages are fast becoming ghost towns due to the migration of residents to these towns.

Infrastructure bonds gain currency

Article Abstract:

Indonesia turns to capital markets to finance a large portion of its infrastructure projects. The Indonesian tollroad developers provide the highest bond issuance to sponsor most of the projects. However, constraints are seen to be posed by the state-owned tollroads corporation, Jasa Marga as it announces plans to stop guaranteeing land purchase prices for the projects.
