Women account for just 1% of the United Kingdom's constructionindustry, and just 9% of architects, with female architects such as Gladys Martinez and MaggiePickles complaining they must work much harder than their male counterparts to gain respect.Pickles has founded the Women in Construction Alliance that aims to promote opportunities forwomen in the industry. Martinez and Pickles were awarded the contract to design the newBlackburne House women's training centre in Liverpool, England.

Palumbo looks to a bright future for architecture

Architects need to regain their confidence in their own designs, according to Lord Palumbo. Society finds it easy to criticise architecture now, but greater tolerance is needed. Architects can create the heritage of tomorrow by making designs of excellence. The designs must be both functional and aesthetic.
