But look under the other Bush

Article Abstract:

Jeb Bush, governor of Florida, aims to end affirmative action in that state, a move that critics argue will lead to a reduction in the proportion of non-whites in universities. A similar move in Texas had not had this result. Allowing the top students from each high school graduating class access to university has brought in students from poorer areas such as those from rural high schools, where there were previously few students going on to university. Supporters of the move in Florida see it as a way of preserving racial diversity while ending racial quotas, which have become increasingly unpopular.

Too sick to wait: health care

Article Abstract:

Florida has instituted a voluntary system of 'managed competition' to control health care costs. Under this system, pools of state funds, employer contributions and government worker contributions would be used to bargain with health care providers for lower rates.

Kentucky moonshine

Article Abstract:

Kentucky has proposed a model health care plan that would mandate insurance for everyone. The state would pay the insurance premiums for the unemployed, state workers and welfare recipients. Companies would be required to provide insurance for their employees.
