Article Abstract:

A study of the UK engineering industry found it was suffering from a feeling the sector was in decline. Some firms are looking for other companies to carry out their manufacturing therefore some new work may be available for contractors. A study into role of venture capital in UK industry, during 1994-98, found more than 1 million people were employed in firms supported by venture capital. Employment in venture backed industries was rising by 24% in comparison to 1.3% for the rest of the UK. It also found on average firms backed by venture had rises in pre-tax profits, exports and sales.

In defence of buyouts

Article Abstract:

The venture capital industry has been accused of failing to invest in new business by its preference in using its investment capability to support management buyouts. In its defence, representatives of the buyout industry point to the success of buyouts which allow experienced managers to take control of their own business often revitalizing a failing company. A survey showed that 60% of investments from venture capital was directed at management buyouts worth 5 billion pounds sterling in 1995.

The findings of a survey carried out in the leveraged buyouts sector by the European Private Equity & Venture Capital Association are presented. The strategic importance of the venture capital in the buying process is emphasized.
