The Rs243-crore Kinetic Engineering Ltd of Pune now has only 5 percent share of the 2-wheeler market. It has already launched 3 vehicles - Safari V2 (moped), Pride FX (scooterette) and K4-100 (step-through motorcycle). It plans to launch some more variants of these vehicles by 2001 AD. Its production of mopeds was 163,191 units in 1997-98 (195,923 mopeds in 1987-88). It intends to increase the dealers in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Orissa. Kinetic Engineering Ltd is to benefit from the exit of Honda as it will have a marketing network of over 500 dealers across India. It is to invest Rs30 crore in promoting the Kinetic brand. It is now adapting a motorcycle engine it bought from a Korean firm to launch its 4-stroke motorcycle by mid-1999. (tsm) (kvr)

Indian Shaving Products Ltd, a 51 percent subsidiary of Gillette, has seen its earnings per share grow by nearly 100 percent from Rs4.5 in 1996-97 to Rs8.9 in 1997-98. The company has an 80 percent share of the twin-track razor segment. The company has to look at other avenues for growth as volume sales of twin-track razors has been increasing at only 5 percent per annum. The company has decided to launch pre and post-shaving preparations for men and shaving products for women. The company will find it difficult to match the pricing of competitors like Colgate- Palmolive and Godrej as it has to import its products. (khr)
