INDIAN MILK ON A HEALTHY TROT

Article Abstract:

India's production of milk is estimated at 74. 5 million tonnes in 1998-99 and expected to reach 77 million tonnes in 1999-2000. The output of buffalo milk, which now accounts for 55 percent of the total output, has been encouraged by a fat-based pricing system. Whole milk powder accounts for 15 p of the total milk powder production while skimmed milk powder accounts for 25 percent and infant milk food for 10 percent. The production of butter/ghee is expected to increase from 1.47 million tonnes in 1997-98 to 1.60 million tonnes in 1998-99, with ghee output estimated at 1.35 million tonnes and butter at 250,000 tonnes. The country's per capita consumption of milk is estimated at 208 gms per day in 1998-99 against 202 gms per day in 1997-98. (khr)
