CZECHIA: LATER CHRUDIM BOUGHT BY WIENERBERGER

The world's biggest brick maker, Wienerberger Ziegelindustrie AG of Austria, is expanding its market leadership in the Czech Republic by acquiring a majority stake in the country's second-biggest brick producer Later Chrudim a.s. from Erste Private Equity Limited, a participatory holding of Erste Bank. Later Chrudim has 6 brick works and a ceiling panel factory with 371 staff. In 1998 it generated a turnover of Kc 298mn or Sch 112mn, while the Czech operations of Wienerberger reached sales of Sch 530mn. Altogether Wienerberger generated a turnover of Sch 15.73bn and a pre-tax profit of Sch 2.34bn in 1998.

US: WIENERBERGER ACQUIRES GENERAL SHALE

Article Abstract:

The Austrian building material group Wienerberger has taken over the second largest brick producer of the US, General Shale, for Sch 3.44bn. General Shale has 25 factories and a market share of 12% in the US. Wienerberger strengthened its position as the world market leader in its core sector. Wienerberger wants to become a global player by further takeovers over the next few years.

The insolvent Austrian window manufacturer Karl Niederleitner GmbH has been acquired by the Austrian company Fertigbeton GmbH. It is expected that the new owner will take over all of the 150 staff.
