Cache of the day; illegal flights and arms traffic cause security concern

Article Abstract:

The accidental discovery of a smuggled arms cache in India's West Bengal state, in the Purulia district, has triggered a confused investigation and accusations between govt branches. Villagers happened to be near the drop of 300 assault rifles, grenades, launchers, and ammunition, and several days later authorities intercepted a plane believed to have dropped the weapons, though the operation's leader escaped. Authorities do not know for whom the guns were intended, but the incident raises important security questions.

Red rally

Article Abstract:

Indian Finance Minister P. Chidambaram hopes to reinforce foreign investors' enthusiasm over the new government by cutting the fiscal deficit and improving on the feeble privatization effort. He may have to move quickly, given widespread prognoses of a swift demise for the United Front coalition government, but he seems prepared to do so. The stockmarket leapt 4.7% after the government won a vote of confidence, and analysts say the rally is driven by foreign portfolio funds seeking long-term, blue-chip opportunities.
