Calculated risks in reclamation

Article Abstract:

An Oct 1998 seminar investigated land reclamation issues. Areas of the UK currently undergoing reclamation include Stockley Park, which was the venue for the seminar, the Earth Centre project on an old coal mine in Yorkshire, and the area around the Millennium Exhibition site at Greenwich. The discussion indicated that, as profit was a major motivating factor for the Stockley Park project, other issues had less importance on this site. Experts involved in the Greenwich project discussed strategies for addressing the risk factor which will always accompany land reclamation.

Risks to firefighters

Article Abstract:

The inclusion of smoke shafts is intended as a form of drawing smoke out of a building to ensure greater safety for firefighters. Pressure is introduced which draws smoke up the shaft, although the temperature of air in the shaft may have a detrimental effect on the drawing ability, causing smoke to remain in the shaft. Extraction by mechanical means would allow smoke to be drawn up the shaft by replacing extracted air at the head of the shaft.

Specialising in risks: project risk analysis and management is, like project management, a growing discipline and one in which architects should shine

Article Abstract:

Project management is an expanding market sector within construction/consultancy services, developed in response to the requirement for strong management skills. Architects have been slow to embrace project management and its supporting technique of risk analysis and management. This enables risks to be identified and prevented, and increases the understanding of a project.
