Cambodia takes a bath

Article Abstract:

Cambodia's economy will collapse unless the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (Untac) acts quickly but any move by the UN to help would be resisted by the Khmer Rouge because it would improve the Phnom Penh regime's public image and thus would threaten peace in the country. The government has released newly printed money and the increased circulation has caused rapid inflation and social unrest which is to the advantage of the Khmer Rouge. The Untac has reacted by taking control of the National Bank of Cambodia to prevent the circulation of more banknotes.

Unsettled land: UN's delayed arrival starts to undermine peace settlement

Article Abstract:

The United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia's (Untac) delayed arrival in Cambodia has caused the major warring factions to revive their fight against one another in an effort to gain control of the government. To make matters worse, Untac's imminent intervention will coincide with the start of the rainy season, making it even more difficult to demobilize rival armies within Cambodia. Untac is tasked, among other things, to maintain a peaceful environment in the country until the general elections in Apr 1993.

Men of war: demobilised soldiers pose threat to peace

Article Abstract:

The ceasefire in Cambodia has caused idleness and restlessness among soldiers, thereby precipitating crimes and creating a state of anarchy in some parts of the country. It is the opinion of faction leaders and the United Nations Advance Mission in Cambodia (Unamic) that prompt actions have to be taken to dispel resentment among unemployed soldiers. Demobilized soldiers, who were trained only for war, are scared to return to a civilian way of life and are uncertain of how to make a living for their families.
