Capital punishment

Article Abstract:

Former police general Alfredo Lim's election as new mayor of Manila has been seen as a chance for the city torid itself of criminality. Lim's career as a law enforcer attracted many votersin a city where crime and prostitution have become very visible. To stamp out criminality with necessary force, Lim intends to complement the regular police force with an elite 5,000-man unit composed of recruits who are college graduates. Helping Lim in his efforts to improve Manila's image are the Department of Tourism, the Tourist Belt Businessmen's Assn and the Hotel and Restaurant Assn of the Philippines.

Father knows best

Article Abstract:

Bangkok slum defender Joe Maier, a Catholic priest, freely criticizes even his own superiors as he works to protect and help his charges in Klong Toey. Familiar with slum Thai and English as well as more sophisticated vernacular, he jousts readily with officials who seek to move the slum-dwellers out and free their land for speculation. In 1972 he opened the Human Development Center, which runs on Church funds and other donations, offering medical services, protection and education for children, and care for AIDS patients.

A soldier's life: general's memoir recalls the Malayan insurgency

Article Abstract:

General Kitti Ratanachaya of Thailand has published a book, Putting Out the Southern Fire, detailing his 34-year war against the communist insurgency led by Chin Peng. In it he reveals startling details about the conflict's resolution, including how he drew Chin Peng from his home in Guangzhou into peace talks with Thailand and Malaysia, which long bore the brunt of the conflict. The two leaders are now good friends, and Kitti will soon retire from a military that rebuked his independence by revoking his command.
