Cathedrals of consumption

Article Abstract:

Architect, BDP leads the shopping centre design market in Britain. Five BDP centres have been opened in 1992. They show many similarities but each is adapted to its location and intended customers. The centres in Kingston, Ipswich, Wimbledon and Sutton are all enclosed with minimal street elevations. Longmarket, Canterbury is a courtyard-style development which conforms to strict planning requirements in a historic location. Factors such as parking, access, fire safety, services and finish are similar and represent current trends towards transparency and clarity.
