Cause for optimism?

Article Abstract:

The Merseyside region currently has Development Area status under UK Regional Policy and EU Objective One status, as it continues to experience serious economic difficulties. Unemployment in the region averaged 14% in May 1996, the highest level for any UK region and considerably above the national average. However, there are a number of positive features which have the potential to assist economic recovery there. These include strong performance for its leading companies and considerable improvements to its infrastructure.

Inward investment into Merseyside

Article Abstract:

The UK has traditionally been a key destination for inward investment in the European Union, offering incentives including flexible employment conditions and relatively low labour rates. In the north-west of the country, the Merseyside region has been particularly successful in attracting investment. This is mainly due to the work of organisations such as the Mersey Partnership and the Mersey Development Corp. The region offers a very productive workforce and low operating costs.

Fund raising in Merseyside

Article Abstract:

Fund raising activity in the UK has undergone a number of changes recently. In the Merseyside region, problems are still being caused by high unemployment, but there are signs of investment in capital equipment and of new outlets for service companies. Recent developments include the Merseyside Special Investment Fund, which is likely to provide financial support for around 500 companies, many of which will be involved in manufacturing.
