Causing offence

Article Abstract:

China is concerned about talks between the US and Japan and others about a possible agreement on East Asian missile defenses. This concern could create problems over the planned arrival of Chinese prime minister, Zhu Rongji, in the US in April 1999. China is becoming increasingly powerful in the region and plans, over the long term, to displace the US and become the most important power in East Asia. Japan is concerned about N Korea, and sees missile defenses as important since otherwise Congress may seek to withdraw US troops from the region, while Taiwan also seeks better defenses.

Obuchi rallies his troops

Article Abstract:

Japanese prime minister, Keizo Obuchi, has been effective in tackling a number of issues, such as nationalization of two ailing banks. Japan's coalition government is being repaired and the Liberal Party of Ichiro Ozawa has been brought back. Ozawa favors a greater role for Japan's armed forces, and his attempts to do so are likely to meet with opposition. Defense and constitutional issues are likely to become important since there is little disagreement over the need for measures to help the economy.

Telling it like it, up to a point, was: secrets revealed
