Centrifugal forces: armed incursions alarm country's neighbours

Article Abstract:

Burma's efforts to quell rebellion is straining its relations with border countries. Burmese troops' disrespectful crossing over borders into Thailand and Bangladesh territories in search of rebels sometimes culminates into fights with the neighboring countries' armies. China, which supplies arms to Burma, does not alleviate the tensions by adding to Burma's already impressive arsenal. Instead, China shows its increasing influence in the region by acting as a mediator in talks between Burma and Bangladesh.

Burmese plunder: Rangoon unleashes an onslaught of logging

Article Abstract:

Burma's rich and vast areas of rainforest is fast being depleted due to indiscriminate logging activity. Agreements made in 1989 between the governments of Thailand and Burma have resulted in alarming devastation rates of 1.2 million cubic meters of logs extracted annually until 1991, a 100% increase on Burma's annual total logging. The Thai military appears to play a large part in the deforestation since they pressured Thai Gen Chaovalit Yongchaiyut to secure logging concessions from Burma.

Bristling border: new Thai government faces rift with Burma

Article Abstract:

Burma's abrupt coolness toward Thailand apparently results from the Burmese leadership's new sense of security and control following smashing victories over the Karen rebellion. No longer dependent on Thai goodwill, Burmese authorities have stopped work on a friendship bridge, ordered citizens not to buy Thai goods, and begun arresting vendors. Burma is instead playing up links to Singapore and Indonesia, the latter perhaps as a model of military involvement in the govt.
