China market roars

Article Abstract:

South Korea's effort to replace its light industry exports such as textiles and shoes with more expensive products such as cars, petrochemicals, specialty steel and semiconductors has progressed well under Pres Kim Young Sam. Rising wages meant that South Korea could no longer produce labor-intensive light industry products at a competitive price. China has emerged as a significant new target for South Korean exports. South Korea's direct trade with China should reach $8 billion in 1993, with China on a course to becoming the fourth-largest importer of South Korean products.

Lone crusader

Article Abstract:

Chong Kap Su is typical of some younger Japanese Koreans who wish to preserve their cultural identity, but not to opt for affiliation with the politics of either North Korea or South Korea. He founded the One Korea Movement with the aim of uniting Koreans throughout the world to work for the good of the Korean people. The movement avoids criticism of either political regime. Chong is optimistic about the work of the movement, but it exists in an environment where overseas Koreans increasingly identify with the cultures in which they live.

Article Abstract:

The normalization of diplomatic ties between South Korea and China has resulted in South Korea's ethnic Chinese community being divided in their attitude towards China. Increased contacts with China have altered people's negative perceptions of China. About 40% of the the ethnic Chinese are favorably inclined towards China while the rest remain firm supporters of Taiwan. There are likely to be disputes over the distribution of embassy property between China and Taiwan.
