China misdials on cellphones

Article Abstract:

The cell phone market in China is surging with a market size of 330 million subscribers and sales for 2005 are expected to increase by 11 percent. Western companies are ringing in greater market share by offering all the bells and whistles on their cell phone products while the Chinese wireless telecommunications companies are building up inventories of unpopular cell models that then are sold at a discount, decreasing profit and delaying product development.

Legend Group Ltd., a major computer maker in China, is planning to become a serious competitor by introducing new products. The company, headed by Liu Chuanzhi, is also planning to expand its operations in foreign markets. However, Legend is facing several obstacles that are prevalent in the personal computer industry.
