China to restart WTO talks

Article Abstract:

China has announced that it is ready to resume negotiations aimed at securing its entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO). The WTO talks, which were broken off for three months after US warplanes accidentally bombed the Chinese embassy in Belgrade, are expected to resume after a scheduled meeting between Chinese Pres Jiang Zemin and US Pres Bill Clinton at the Sept 1999 APEC meeting in New Zealand. China's angry rhetoric after the embassy bombing has softened considerably following the acceptance of a US offer to compensate bombing victims with $4.5 million.

Beijing makes renewed push for membership in WTO

Article Abstract:

The Chinese government has conducted a series of key trade talks with Japan and Australia in an effort to strengthen its bid for World Trade Organization (WTO) membership. The move was made amidst growing tension between US and China as a result of the Chinese Embassy bombing in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. Pres Clinton, however, has expressed plans for restoring normal trade relations with China and has announced plans to visit the country to shed light on the May Belgrade bombing. Experts believe that China's entry to WTO would boost its ailing economy.
