Denmark: Heineken to target Danish beer market

Article Abstract:

The Danish government is expected to lose its battle against soft-drink and beer in aluminium cans and may have to adjust to the EU's request to allow cans in the country. The Danish idea behind the ban on cans has been to protect the Danish environment from all types of throw-away packaging. The prospect of Denmark losing the case has encouraged Dutch Heineken to make plans for a massive entry into the Danish beer market as from the beginning of next year. Jan Vendelbo of Theodoridis A/S, the Danish importer, says they plan to sell both Heineken, American Miller and Coors as well as Pilsner Urquell in cans on the Danish market. Vendelbo expects beer in cans to reach a market share of around 20%.

DENMARK: FUGLSANG INVESTS IN CANNED BEER PRODUCTION

Article Abstract:

The Danish brewery SC Fuglsang, Haderslev, has recently taken a new plant for production of canned beer into operation. The brewery is targeting the border trade market, and accounts for up to 30% of beer purchased by Danish consumers on the German side of the border. The paper writes that there remain only three breweries in Denmark that are not able to produce canned beer: Hancock, Thisted and Vestfyen. What is more, the Danish ban on beverage cans is likely to be abolished through a decision by CJEC, the Court of Justice of the European Communities, in late 2001, at the earliest, according to the paper.

Denmark: Tender bids for drink can transports

Article Abstract:

The Danish brewing industry expects Denmark to lose the battle against aluminium drink cans. Already more than a year ago the Danish brewers and the country's retail trade set up Dansk Retursystem, the recycling company that assumes the responsibility for the handling of empty cans. Dansk Retursystem is now in the process of evaluating bids from haulage contractors to be able to opt for a suitable system for transporting the empty cans. According to Dansk Retursystem MD Benny Rasmussen, the annual transport of cans will amount to between 300 and 400 million cans.
