Department stores crowd in: glut thins profits as retail spending retreats

Article Abstract:

The growing number of department stores in China has resulted in slower growth and intense competition. Department stores are urged to merge as poor results continue to drive profits and stock prices down. The downturn in the retail industry is also linked to the privatization of state-owned businesses that have resulted in the layoff of workers that adds pressure to the local economy.
