China: what's yours is theirs?

Article Abstract:

Western companies seeking to invest in China should be aware of the problem of goods being copied or technology used without authorization. Although a system of licensing of intellectual property and trademarks exists, the policing of such rights is very difficult especially when local government co-operation is required. Western companies should rigorously ensure that all their products and ideas are put onto the register and they should endeavour to follow up any encroachments.

Put on a snappy face

Article Abstract:

The expense of designing and implementing a new logo for a small firm initially seem prohibitive but the positive response a successful logo will bring should far outweigh initial expenditure costs. A logo helps develop a company's image, promoting an organisation's abilities through brand awareness. Ease of recall and a summarization of a firm's strengths through trust should be the two main points to consider when designing a logo.

The high price of intellect

Article Abstract:

It can often be extremely expensive and time-consuming to obtain patents, according to the Institute of Patentees and Inventors. This organization is linking with others, including the Business Environment Simplification Task Force, to exert pressure for reforms to the patent system, making it simpler and less expensive. Obtaining a patent can be particularly difficult and expensive if an inventor wishes to sell a product abroad.
