Milking the market for all it's worth

Article Abstract:

The Italian milk industry has undergone a profound change in the last few years, as a result of the privatization of municipal dairies. The milk industry in Italy is mostly split between long-life milk or fresh milk. Both markets are mature, with any growth coming from the acquisition of small, regional companies. The long-life market is highly concentrated, with many small firms and a few national operators, such as Gruppo Cragnotti and Parmalat. The fresh milk sector is also dominated by small, local companies.

Irish merger with international implications

Article Abstract:

The merger of Ireland's Waterford Foods and Avonmore in summer 1997 created an agribusiness with an annual turnover nearing 2.5 billion pounds sterling. The merger is probably the most significant deal ever carried out in Ireland because of the two companies' dominant position in the Irish dairy market and their impact on farming and rural life. Several important issues needed to be solved before the merger could proceed, including the major role played by Irish dairy co-operatives in the pre-merger process.
