Taiwan stands up
Article Abstract:
The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has won elections in Taiwan, and Chen Shui-bian has been elected president. The Kuomintang has lost the elections after 50 years rule, and the party may not even survive. There appear to be major differences between China and Taiwan, and relations between the two countries have been difficult. The DPP's campaign was focused on the need to end corruption, and Chen Shui-bian may be prgmatic on the issue of relations with China.

Taiwan takes another broadside from the mainland
Article Abstract:
China has criticised Annette Lu Hsui-lien, who is to be Taiwan's new vice president, and western analysts are concerned about Chinese relations with Taiwan. Taiwan is unlikely to be convinced that unification is desirable if attacks continue.
