High inventory levels bog down hynix in a tough chip market

Article Abstract:

Hynix Semiconductor, the third-largest maker of memory chips in the world, has announced a plant shutdown of six months, amounting to the layoff of 600 employees. The demand for the dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips that Hynix produces has tremendously gone down, with prices plunging about 90% this past year. Hynix intends to reduce losses of operating by cutting the production of DRAMs.

Chip makers sidestep WTO: Chinese VAT helps domestic manufacturers

Article Abstract:

Semiconductor manufacturers in China, including Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp., may gain competition from lowered tariffs due to China's accession to the World Trade Organization. However, China's high VAT on imported semiconductor chips will continue to make domestically-made chips less expensive.

Long-term chip leaders

Article Abstract:

The Taiwanese semiconductor market seems to be rebounding as evidenced by the recent two-month rally in stock prices for industry leaders United Microelectronics and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing. Although the companies are improving their financial fundamentals, the share rally could also be explained by abundant market liquidity.
