Article Abstract:

Condominium units in Bangkok may become a lucrative investment for foreigners in 1992. At the height of a construction boom last year, units were being sold for between baht 20,000 to 40,000 per sq m, and an estimated 25% were bought by speculators. Speculators are eager to sell to enable them to pay the bulk of payments upon completion of the units. Prices peaked last year and have gone down due to the availability of many vacant units, but the increased interest in apartment-living accompanying the steadily growing economy will ensure a stable demand in the next few years.

Processed profits: Thai firms stake claims to a huge market

Article Abstract:

Thailand's processed foods industry is endeavoring to increase its share of the international market by expanding into Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and Singapore. Leading this effort are the agribusiness conglomerate Charoen Pokphand Group and the much smaller Chiangmai Frozen Foods. China is the main foreign competitor in the effort to obtain more value from exported processed foods. The Thai industry's use of hand-processing makes its food more appealing to foreign consumers, but this advantage may be overcome by lower Chinese labor costs.

Double trouble

Article Abstract:

Thailand's pro-democracy parties are faced with the reality of coping with votebuying, political patronage and even trickery that have been the hallmarks of traditional parties. One typical trick being waged by incumbents is the fielding of nuisance candidates bearing the same surname as rival candidates. Another case is misinformation on actual political allegiances and alliances.
