Chris Smith's digital dare

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom is seeking to develop digital broadcasting technology and has offered a digital radio commercial franchise. One application for the franchise has been made, from a consortium which has a 57% stake held by GWR. Radios are likely to cost 500 pounds sterling and the pioneering nature of the technology means that economies of scale have yet to develop. TV companies, meanwhile, hope that the government will set a date for the end of analog broadcasting to boost demand for digital TV. The terrestrial TV franchise is held by British Digital Braodcasting which covers only 90% of the UK.

The BBC's begging bowl

Article Abstract:

The British Broadcasting Corp (BBC) appears increasingly anachronistic, though there is a public fondness for the broadcaster. The BBC faces similar problems to other established broadcasters which face increased costs and competition, with channels multiplying. There have been a number of attempts to decide on the BBC's future, and decisions have been deferred. The BBC is seeking more funds to enter digital broadcasting and there has been little debate on whether it should receive public funds. Funds could be raised through a voluntary subscription and by floating the BBC.

And don't dare sack me again

Article Abstract:

Peter Mandelson has been appointed United Kingdom secretary for Nothern Ireland just ten months after having to leave the cabinet as the result of a financial scandal. Mandelson has a number of political rivals, but a strong relationship with prime minister, Tony Blair, so this relationship is not likely to be affected by the efforts of Northern Ireland's politicians. Mandelson also has subtlety and precision, qualities that could help him in Northern Ireland.
