Circling hawks

Article Abstract:

China's failure to be chosen as an Olympic site has many old-guard Chinese communists and military leaders openly criticizing the US. China has failed to allow a human rights inspection tour after promising during its campaign for the Olympics that they would do so. Both the press and the politicians are blaming the US for their failed bid. Hardline military leaders are beginning to grow dissatisfied with their role in Deng Xiaoping's reform plans and feel that arms restrictions placed on China are stunting the country's growth as a world power.

Punches pulled

Article Abstract:

Political compulsions motivated US and Chinese authorities to avoid a trade war. The two countries reached an agreement on Oct 10, 1992, just one day before punitive duties were to be imposed on China for non-compliance with section 301 of the US Trade Act. The main clauses of the agreement require China to publish all trade-related legislation, reduce tariff on several US goods and lift licensing requirements and import control. In return, China expects the US to support its joining the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (Gatt).

Shanghaied by Taiwan

Article Abstract:

The US decision to admit Taiwan's President Lee Teng-hui for an unofficial visit to Cornell University stirred jubilation on the island and outrage in Beijing. Analysts disagree over the incident's ultimate significance, but note that it bolsters the Chinese impression that the Clinton administration responds to pressure. The US Congress, which has elements strongly hostile to China, did support Lee and has recently made several moves that it knew would anger Beijing. The incident could hurt General Secretary Jiang Zemin.
