City moves to open telecom market for long distance; government to allow more competition, bolstering opportunities for foreign, local companies

Article Abstract:

The decision of the Hong Kong government to liberalize competition in the long-distance telephone market has elicited both negative and positive comments from the sector. Both foreign and local telephone companies reaped the benefits of such a move since their stocks posted increases upon announcement of the news. On the other hand, Hong Kong Telecommunications Ltd, the biggest telephone company in the city, is accusing the government of favoring its competitors. Analysts also declare that the multinationals will reap the bigger benefits from the opening of the market to competition.
